God save the queens
I first came across the artist Vienna Vienna on Instagram, fed to me by our algorithm overlords (not punk at all). But the track "God Save The Queens" caught my attention immediately.
Apparently, this is "Glimmer Rock", and I like it.
Whenever a random international artist I've been following online announces they're playing a gig local to me, I add tickets to my basket faster than you can say "touch grass". Brain rot is real, and live music is the jolt back into reality that I'm increasingly clinging onto tighter.
Vienna Vienna says he ripped off the Sex Pistols with "God Save The Queens" but I disagree. It's just a cultural reference that is used to perfection for a new audience at a time where all the elements that created the punk movement of the 70s are back in play. Punk culture and queerness go hand in hand, after all.
So as Vienna Vienna lands in Brighton - the UK's unofficial LGBTQ+ capital - I've taken his genius lyric "God save the queens and all the in-betweens", combined it with a massive nod to Jamie Reid's iconic Sex Pistols artwork and swapped out the Union Jack for Valentino Vecchietti's intersex-inclusive global pride flag.
